To protect the environment and local communities alike, recycling as much waste as possible is essential. For many years, people have been satisfied with simply burying waste in landfills, but the long-term impact can see surrounding soil and watercourses impacted. As a result, there is an increased drive by local authorities to recycle more waste than ever before, and Cheshire West and Chester is no different.
Figures show that last year, more household waste from Cheshire West and Chester was recycled than in previous years. The Local Government Association (LGA) commented that the improvement was due to the joint efforts of councils and households working hard to increase how much waste is recycled.
Statistics from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) showed that 98,357 tonnes of household waste was recycled last year in Cheshire West and Chester. This figure represents 57.6% of all the rubbish collected within the region, rising from the 54.5% recycling rate recorded in previous years 2020 t0 2021.
A spokesperson for the LGA commented that households in the area have now made a “real shift” to make sure that they recycle as much of their waste as possible, while local councillors work hard to ensure up-to-date information is shared on what is recyclable. Defra has commented that it wants to reuse and recycle more waste while helping people to do so.
